7th Pay Commission: Panel ‘unsure’ over 30 per cent salary hike, Cabinet unlikely to approve recommendations this month

New Delhi, June 21: Central government employees will have to wait more for the 30 per cent hike after the implementation of 7th Pay Commission. According to reports, Cabinet is unlikely to approve the implementation of the revised recommendations this month. There were reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will take final call over the proposals of 7th Pay Commission this month, but new developments suggested that the Empowered Committee of Secretaries was ‘unsure’ about the proposed 30 per cent hike in the salaries of the central government employees.

As per the report of The Sen Times, the 13-member Committee of Secretaries headed by the Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha couldn’t decided whether to it appropriate to hike 30 per cent basic pay. The panel wanted to see more data from Implementation Cell, so the pay scale for central government employees had not yet been completed.

“There are still complications regarding the new pay scale proposals; the Empowered Committee of Secretaries did not take a final decision of 30 percent basic pay hike during its meeting on June 13. They want to move to two other meetings to make final decision for overcoming the difficulties to fix new pay and allowances, after which it will be sent for cabinet nod,” a Finance Ministry official was quoted as saying.

The recent developments indicated that the Finance Ministry is unlikely to take final call on the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission this month. The final decision will be taken after two meeting of the Empowered Committee of Secretaries after receiving more data by Implementation Cell. The panel will submit its report to the Finance Ministry, after which Cabinet will take final decision over it.

According to media reports, the panel is likely to propose a whopping 30 per cent hike in government employees’s salary, making the minimum amount Rs 23,500, whereas, the maximum salary would be Rs 3,25,000. The 7th Pay Commission, headed by Justice A K Mathur, had originally proposed hike of 14.27 in basic pay, 23.55 per cent in salary, allowances and pensions. The hike in allowances was recommended 63 per cent while pension was proposed to rise 24 per cent.

47 lakh central government employees and 52 lakh pensioners will be benefited from the recommendations of 7th Pay Commission. The recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission will impact the Central Budget by Rs 73,650 crore and the Railway Budget by Rs 28,450 crore.
