Preliminary Report on Derailment of Howrah-Dehradun Express on Varanasi-Faizabad-Lucknow Section

Shri Raj Kumar Kardam, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northern Circle, New Delhi held a statutory inquiry into the derailment of 13009 Up Howrah-Dehradun Express train at km 842/6-843/1 between Mihrawan and Khetasarai railway stations on Varanasi-Faizabad-Lucknow Section, Broad Gauge, single line, non-electrified section of Lucknow Division of Northern Railway on 31.05.2012 at about 13.15 hrs.

As a result of the accident, 03 persons died, 04 persons were grievously injured and 23 passengers sustained simple injury.

According to the provisional findings of the Commissioner appended with his Preliminary Report, the accident occurred due to “Failure of Equipment – “Permanent Way”. These findings are under the consideration of the Government.
